Vacancy: Senior AI/ML Platform Engineer Amsterdam
- Do you want to build the foundation under AI systems that determine how researchers, doctors and companies worldwide find and apply knowledge?
- Do you want to bring the next generation of AI assistants into production, on top of one of the richest datasets in the world?
- Do you thrive at the intersection of Machine Learning, Search and Software Engineering, with direct societal impact?
- Does up to €120k salary (based on 36 hours), 10 training days, 20 days per year working remotely from abroad, up to 3 days working from home, a strong pension and a virtually unlimited training budget sound like something you'd say yes to?
Then this role deserves a serious look.
Your employer: building how the world uses knowledge
You'll join a highly stable, globally operating organization that has been shaping how knowledge is stored, enriched and unlocked for decades. No standard data, but one of the richest knowledge datasets in the world: millions of scientific publications, citation graphsand complex domain-specific information.
Think of researchers discovering new insights, doctors making better decisions and organizations building on scientific progress.
A new layer is now being built on top: AI systems (search, RAG, Agentic AI, reasoning) used directly by millions of users. You translate AI experiments into systems that run at scale. This is no playground. This is AI in production, with global impact.
What makes this moment special: you're joining as one of the first ML Engineers in a new team building out the full MLOps capability from scratch. You help define what it looks like. And more roles will follow. This is the start of a major new chapter.
You'll work in an organization with 200+ data scientists, the majority at PhD level, that has produced more than 400 peer-reviewed publications at the world's top AI conferences over the past 10 years. Growth opportunities are exceptional: more than 40% of internal positions are filled internally. On top of that, you get access to a vast training library, a generous training budget and 10 study days per year.
Your role: Senior AI/ML Platform Engineer Amsterdam
In this role as Senior AI/ML Platform Engineer Amsterdam, you are responsible for bringing AI systems into production on one of the largest knowledge datasets in the world. Not "involved in." Not "supporting." You take ML models and GenAI solutions from experiment and make sure they run reliably, scalably and reproducibly in production.
You work daily in hybrid squads alongside data scientists, software engineers, product owners and Responsible AI specialists. You work in sprints, deliver features and ensure the data science teams ship their components the right way, in the right environments and at the right quality.
We are looking for people who have designed, built and managed ML systems in production themselves. From scratch to deployment.
You'll work on systems such as:
- GAR+RAG pipelines: query interpretation, chunking, embeddings, hybrid retrieval and semantic search
- Search & ranking using Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, vector databases and graph databases
- Prompt libraries, guardrails and structured output for LLMs via Bedrock, SageMaker or self-hosted
- Model registries and artifact stores for reproducibility and governance
- Evaluation pipelines: offline IR metrics (NDCG, MAP, MRR), LLM quality metrics (faithfulness, grounding) and A/B testing
- CI/CD for ML, including automated data validation, model testing and deployment
- Infrastructure cost optimization through monitoring, scaling and efficient resource utilization
All in an environment where reliability and content integrity weigh just as heavily as performance. You keep a sharp eye on the landscape: the latest developments in GenAI, NLP and RAG you translate into concrete experiments and systems.
Because you're joining as one of the first ML Engineers in this team, you have direct influence on how pipelines, evaluation, tooling and team collaboration are set up. What you build becomes the standard for everyone who comes after you.
What you need to bring:
- At least 4 to 6 years of experience in ML Engineering or MLOps, with a proven track record of personally designing, building and managing ML systems in production
- Strong programming skills in Python
- Completed technical MSc or higher
- Solid foundation in GenAI: you don't need to be a data scientist, but you understand how LLMs work, know the architectural trade-offs and can discuss them technically
- Hands-on experience with AWS
- You think in systems, not just models
- You're a team player who explains complex topics clearly to diverse stakeholders
- You're comfortable in an environment where processes and systems still need to be defined
What makes you stand out:
- Experience with Azure or GCP alongside AWS
- Hands-on with MLOps platforms such as AWS SageMaker, MLflow or Azure ML
- Working experience with LangChain and/or LangGraph
- Experience with search and retrieval technologies: Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, Solr, vector databases or graph databases (e.g. Neo4j)
- Experience with ML frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow or PySpark
- Experience with large-scale data processing (e.g. Spark)
- Familiarity with scholarly publishing, bibliometrics or citation graphs
- You can containerize a Python model and understand how it lands in a Java-based production environment. Experience with Java or Scala
What's on offer?
- €95,000 to €120,000 (based on 36 hours) + 5% profit share bonus
- 36-hour working week (full-time), salary includes 8% holiday allowance and 13th month
- 13.2% personal choice budget (PKB) on top of annual salary
- 50% working from home + flexible hours (1 to 2 days in the Amsterdam office)
- 20 days per year working from abroad
- 25 vacation days + option to buy more via PKB
- Strong pension + insurance
- Share purchase plan
- 400+ training courses + leadership development
- 10 extra days for personal development
- Career roadshows
- Home office budget + tech discounts
- Fitness, wellbeing and events
- Sabbatical option
- Visa sponsorship (HSM) available
