Senior Go Backend Engineer Amsterdam
Senior Go Backend Engineer Amsterdam | Production ownership around physical terminals, path to tech lead | Go, AWS | €85.000 - €100.000 + €20.000 stock options
- Amsterdam
- € 100.000
- Have you already run production Go services where concurrency, idempotency and timeouts were not theory, but the scars that shaped how you design?
- Would you like to keep building hands-on in a new Go team around physical payment terminals, with direct access to the CTO, while growing into broader engineering ownership or tech lead?
- Do you enjoy working with sharp, low-ego peers who reason from CS fundamentals and first principles, and who challenge each other without the drama?
- And do you say yes to an indefinite contract from day one, up to €100.000 plus €20.000 in stock, hybrid in Amsterdam with at least three office days?
Then this role is worth your attention.
Your employer: payment infrastructure where correctness still has room to be shaped
Millions of people depend on this platform when they pay, even though they never see it. This Amsterdam fintech scale-up builds cloud-native payment infrastructure that already processes millions of transactions a day, 24/7, with ambitions well beyond that scale.
The processing layer is live. Expanding into physical payments brings the company closer to merchants across industries. A new product line around terminals creates room to shape architecture and engineering practices, while the existing platform gives you real production scale to reason against.
You will work with technically strong colleagues who communicate clearly and bring real emotional intelligence, in a company with more than 35 nationalities. People explain their thinking clearly, listen carefully and welcome questions. Whiteboard discussions bring together CS fundamentals, first-principles reasoning and different perspectives. That makes it easy to challenge ideas, raise the bar around you and sharpen both technical judgment and how you communicate complex decisions.
The company is mature enough for serious customers and complex production systems, and still small enough that you can know people by name, influence decisions and see the effect of your work. Engineers who show ownership, sound judgement and clear communication can gradually take on more influence over technical direction, mentoring and how the team operates.
Your job: Senior Go Backend Engineer Amsterdam
As Senior Go Backend Engineer Amsterdam, you get the chance to go deep in Go on backend services around physical payment terminals. The hardware comes from a partner. Your services handle merchant-device identity, secure provisioning, configuration and integration with the payment platform.
This is software where almost correct is not good enough. Availability, observability, reliability and correctness are daily engineering concerns, because incorrect state here is real money for a real merchant.
Here, concurrency control, backpressure, timeouts, idempotency and state consistency become practical design decisions. How do you keep concurrency bounded when a dependency slows down? What happens when a request times out after an operation already succeeded? How do you recover when a device comes online twice, or when a retry would charge twice? You use profiling, testing and observability to understand behaviour and make informed choices about performance, resource use and recovery.
You build and run your own solutions, from design and implementation through deployment and production. Combined with close business contact and strong technical peers, that creates a clear path towards broader engineering ownership, mentoring and tech lead responsibilities for someone who wants to stay hands-on while raising the level around them.
What we're looking for
- Substantial experience designing, building and operating backend systems in production, with the battle scars to prove it.
- Strong, hands-on production Go experience, and real depth in the language, its tooling and runtime behaviour.
- Strong CS fundamentals and first-principles reasoning. A completed technical degree, preferably a master's in Computer Science, is a strong plus.
- Practical depth in concurrency, distributed systems and failure handling, supported by concrete examples from your own work.
- Clear communication in English. You get to the essence of a problem quickly and can explain your reasoning at a whiteboard.
- High emotional intelligence: low ego, open to feedback, able to challenge and be challenged constructively.
- Interest in mentoring engineers and helping a young team raise its engineering bar.
Experience with AWS or comparable cloud platforms, containers, payment systems, security or device-adjacent backend work is a plus. Payments domain experience is highly valuable, not required. What matters most is that correctness and production ownership already meant something in your work.
What's on offer
- €85.000 - €100.000 per year, depending on experience.
- €20.000 in stock options, giving you a financial stake in the company's growth.
- A permanent contract from day one.
- A realistic path towards broader engineering ownership or tech lead, while staying hands-on.
- Hybrid working in Amsterdam, with at least three office days per week and more time together during onboarding.
- An inspiring office with excellent lunches and colleagues from more than 35 nationalities.
- 25 holidays, a pension scheme and flexible working hours.
- Travel expense reimbursement and a laptop or MacBook.
