Vacancy: Senior Java Developer Rotterdam
- Do you get energy from improving a mature platform, and from the architecture decisions that shape where it goes in the coming years?
- Does it sound exciting to switch between a Java 25 migration, adding (Gen)AI features, and integrating acquired companies?
- Do you want real ownership, and the chance to help a growing company move technically from A to B through a serious transition?
- And do you say yes to a salary up to €97.000, hybrid working, a good work-life balance, and plenty of room to give technical direction?
Then read on.
Your employer: a growing Dutch SaaS company going through a technical transition
You join a growing Dutch SaaS company from the Rotterdam region, with a platform that helps organisations organise the knowledge and development of their people at scale. It touches a socially relevant theme: people who keep developing themselves. The product has been in production for years and is used by a broad customer base. More importantly for you: the organisation is growing, and the platform is facing a major technical transition. That is exactly where you come in.
The real appeal here is technical. The platform is a mature Java application on AWS that is being prepared for its next phase. The migration from Java 11 to Java 25 is underway, GenAI is being added as a feature, and the tooling and architecture are being modernised step by step. On top of that, the organisation is growing through acquisitions and wants to integrate those systems, which creates serious architecture and business challenges. For an experienced engineer this is the chance to help a company technically from A to B and to really give direction.
The culture is technically mature, open and approachable. The team is close-knit, international, stays for a long time, and meets up outside work too. There is plenty of room for discussion about technical choices, as long as you back them up well. Good to know: the platform partly relies on its own technical solutions alongside the standard Java frameworks, so strong Java fundamentals and the drive to truly understand a system count heavily here. That is exactly what makes the work substantively challenging.
Your role: Senior Java Developer Rotterdam
As a Senior Java Developer Rotterdam, you work on the further development and improvement of the platform, with Core Java 25, Docker, AWS and SQL. You develop independently, take responsibility for quality and maintainability, and get to truly understand the existing codebase and its own technical solutions.
Your added value is in the bigger picture. You spot technical improvements and make concrete proposals, and you clearly explain the pros and cons. You contribute to the Java migration, to better development tooling, and to the architecture behind GenAI features and the integration of acquired systems. You help shape the roadmap and guard the balance between architecture decisions for the short and long term.
You do that together. You work with experienced engineers, share knowledge and ideas, and build support for change. Improvements here come from what the product and the organisation genuinely need.
What are we looking for?
- 8+ years of professional experience as a (Java) Backend Engineer
- Strong Java fundamentals, preferably with LTS 21 or higher
- Experience with containers and cloud such as AWS is a strong plus
- Experience with AI-assisted development and an interest in GenAI
- Solid experience with architecture design, and able to explain trade-offs clearly
- An open, communicative working style and enjoys sharing knowledge
- Experience with or an interest in frontend (TypeScript/Vue) is a nice bonus
What's on offer?
- Salary between €80.000 and €97.000 gross per year, based on experience and impact
- Hybrid working: 2 office days per week
- 25 holidays
- Travel allowance or public transport card
- A do-it-yourself pension budget
- Flexible working hours for a good work-life balance
- Shared lunch on office days
- A laptop and home-office essentials
- Plenty of room to give technical direction and help shape the architecture
- And of course a generous training budget (it is their domain, after all)
