Mid-level Go Backend Engineer Amsterdam
Pioneer a new payment product at global scale | Go, AWS | €70,000 - €90,000 + €20,000 stock options

Your employer: global scale with room to shape what comes next
Millions of people depend on this platform when they pay, even though they never see it. This Amsterdam fintech scale-up builds payment infrastructure serving customers around the world, processing millions of transactions a day, 24/7. With ambitions to support tens of billions of transactions in the coming years, you can help solve the engineering challenges that make that growth possible.
The existing platform gives you substantial production scale to learn from, while a new product line creates room to pioneer. Expanding into physical payments brings the company closer to merchants across industries. Your decisions can influence how that expansion takes shape, from the first service designs to how the product performs for businesses using it.
You'll work with technically exceptional, communicative and emotionally intelligent colleagues, in a company with more than 35 nationalities. People explain their thinking clearly, listen carefully and welcome questions. Whiteboard discussions bring together strong computer science fundamentals, first-principles reasoning and different perspectives. That makes it easy to challenge ideas, learn from experienced engineers from around the world and sharpen both your technical judgment and your ability to communicate complex decisions.
An agile engineering culture, close contact with the business and short feedback cycles help you understand why a problem matters and see the effect of your work. An excellent office and shared lunches make spending time with those colleagues something to look forward to.
Your job: Mid-level Go Backend Engineer Amsterdam
We're looking for an engineer with substantial production Go experience who wants to push that knowledge further. You join two experienced engineers who are deeply passionate about Go, with direct access to the CTO. Working through real design and implementation decisions together will help you deepen your understanding of the language, its runtime and the trade-offs behind reliable services.
Together, you build the backend around physical payment terminals. The hardware comes from a partner; your services handle merchant-device identity, secure provisioning, configuration and integration with the payment platform. This is a new part of the portfolio, so you can help shape its architecture and engineering practices while creating a more direct connection between the platform and merchants.
Here, concurrency control, backpressure, timeouts, idempotency and state consistency become practical design decisions. How do you keep concurrency bounded when dependencies slow down? What happens when a request times out after an operation succeeds? Where does p99 latency come from under load? You use profiling, testing and observability to understand behaviour and make informed choices about performance, resource use and recovery.
You build and run your own solutions, following them through design, implementation, deployment and production. That gives you direct feedback on whether your architecture holds up and whether the product solves the merchant's problem. Combined with close business contact and experienced technical peers, it creates continuous opportunities to improve your judgment, deepen your Go expertise and grow towards broader engineering ownership.
What we're looking for
- At least four years of professional backend engineering experience, including building and operating systems at substantial scale.
- Strong, hands-on production Go experience and real enthusiasm for understanding the language, its tooling and runtime behaviour in depth.
- A completed technical bachelor's degree, preferably a master's in Computer Science. Strong CS fundamentals and first-principles reasoning are essential.
- Practical understanding of concurrency, distributed systems and failure handling, supported by concrete examples of your own work.
- Clear, precise communication in English. You quickly get to the essence of a problem and can explain your reasoning at a whiteboard.
- A proactive, curious approach: you identify risks, bottlenecks and opportunities, investigate their impact and take improvements forward with the team.
Experience with AWS or comparable cloud platforms, containers, payment systems, security or device integrations is a plus.
What's on offer
- €70,000 - €90,000 per year, depending on your experience.
- €20,000 in stock options, giving you a financial stake in the company's growth and potential upside.
- A permanent contract from day one.
- Hybrid working in Amsterdam, with at least three office days per week and more time together during onboarding.
- An inspiring office with excellent lunches and colleagues from more than 35 nationalities.
- 25 holidays, a pension scheme and flexible working hours.
- Travel expense reimbursement and a laptop or MacBook.
- Daily opportunities to learn from highly experienced engineers, deepen your Go expertise and help shape a new product line.
