Your role: Medior Scala / JVM Software Engineer Delft

  • Would you like to work daily with Scala, Cats-Effect and Kotlin on backend software where type safety, correctness and security genuinely make a difference?
  • Would you enjoy building cryptographic services, APIs and gRPC integrations within a pragmatic JVM environment that also embraces Java, Kotlin and AI tooling?
  • Would you like to join a small, growing and well-funded tech scale-up building technology with the ambition to make online interaction safer for more than 550 million Europeans?
  • And would you say yes to a salary of up to €71.280, a fully employer-paid pension, 26 holidays, up to four remote-working days and the possibility to work 32, 36 or 40 hours?

Then this could be the combination of Scala, technical growth and societal impact you are looking for.

Your employer: a small technology company with a major European ambition

Your new employer is a growing Dutch technology company in the Delft region. More and more important processes are moving online. However, trust, security and control over personal data are still nowhere near as well organised as they are in the physical world. This organisation wants to change that!

Its ambition is to build technology that allows citizens, businesses and public-sector organisations to move and collaborate more safely online. Not only in the Netherlands, but ultimately for more than 550 million Europeans.

You will not be joining an organisation that only has an ambition and a pitch deck. The technology already works and is used by renowned organisations. At the same time, the company is still small enough for you to have a visible influence on the product, architecture and future growth.

With new funding and the support of successful serial entrepreneurs who have previously built and scaled major European software organisations, the company is now entering its next phase. New products and services are ready to be developed. This means you can join early and help build technology that could form the foundation for safer online interaction across Europe.

Your role: Medior Scala / JVM Software Engineer Delft

As a Medior Scala / JVM Software Engineer Delft, you will join a compact backend team consisting of two highly experienced software engineers. The current codebase is approximately 80% Scala. You will build new backend services in a functional style using technologies including Cats and Cats-Effect, with correctness, performance and maintainability considered from the very beginning.

You will work on security-sensitive software involving cryptographic operations and the reliable processing of sensitive data. Furthermore, you will build APIs and gRPC integrations, design data models and work with PostgreSQL in an environment where software must be demonstrably correct, testable and auditable.

The technical culture is strong, but not dogmatic. Scala and functional programming are used where they add value. Java, Kotlin, other JVM technologies and AI tools can also be used when they are better suited to the problem.

Because the team is small, you will not work on one anonymous component of a much larger system. You will gain insight into the entire platform, learn directly from strong senior engineers and have genuine influence on technical decisions and improvements. As the organisation grows, you can progress towards Senior Backend Engineer and take increasing ownership of services, domains and technical decision-making.

What is required?

  • At least 2 years of professional backend or software engineering experience
  • Professional experience with Scala or another JVM language, such as Java or Kotlin
  • A strong interest in Scala and functional programming
  • Experience designing, building and testing backend services
  • An understanding of type safety, functional patterns and reliable software
  • Experience with REST APIs, databases and production software
  • The ability to independently take ownership of a defined service or technical domain
  • You care about correctness, security and code quality
  • You are pragmatic, curious and enjoy collaborating with experienced engineers
  • Professional fluency in English
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics or a comparable field

Nice to have:

  • Experience with Scala, Cats, Cats-Effect or the Typelevel ecosystem
  • Knowledge of http4s, Tapir, fs2, Doobie or Akka
  • Experience with gRPC and Protobuf
  • Experience with PostgreSQL and database migrations
  • Experience with property-based testing, such as ScalaCheck
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes and CI/CD
  • Knowledge of cryptography, PKI, certificates or hardware security modules
  • Experience with security-sensitive or highly regulated software

What is offered?

  • Between €60.000 and €71.280 gross per year, including holiday allowance
  • A fully employer-paid pension
  • 26 holidays
  • The possibility to work 32, 36 or 40 hours per week
  • Flexible working hours
  • Up to four remote-working days per week
  • Laptop or MacBook
  • Travel expense reimbursement
  • Daily professional work with Scala within a pragmatic JVM environment
  • Direct collaboration with two highly experienced backend engineers
  • Plenty of room to become stronger in security, software design and product engineering
  • Growth opportunities towards Senior Backend Engineer and broader technical ownership
  • The opportunity to help build, from within a small team, technology with the ambition to impact more than half a billion Europeans

Would you like to work daily with Scala as a Medior Scala / JVM Software Engineer Delft, learn from strong backend engineers and contribute to secure European technology?
