Vacancy: Java Backend Engineer Delft

  • Do you get energy from distributed systems where security, reliability and interoperability are the real challenge?
  • Do you want to build software with real societal impact that helps the Dutch healthcare sector work together far better?
  • Are you looking for an international scale-up with a strong open-source culture and colleagues at a high level, where you take plenty of ownership as an engineer?
  • And do you say yes to a salary up to €65.000 plus bonus up to €5.000, hybrid working, and the option to work fully remote from abroad for one month a year?

Then read on.

Your employer: a healthtech scale-up in Delft that helps healthcare work together

You join a healthtech scale-up in the Delft region that builds software to help Dutch healthcare work together better. The underlying problem: medical information is often scattered across separate IT systems that communicate poorly. This organisation builds the technology that makes data securely, in a standardised way and reliably available where it is needed. Your work is tangible and socially relevant: in the end it touches the care of millions of people.

Technically, this is about genuinely hard problems. You connect systems that were never designed to talk to each other, and make sure that data from all those sources comes together correctly, securely and with its meaning intact. Because it involves medical data, security and reliability are the heart of the work: mistakes are simply not an option. You build your own products and reusable platform components, so your choices ripple out across all of healthcare. For an engineer who loves distributed systems and elegant abstractions, these are exactly the problems that keep you sharp and help you grow fast.

The culture is international and open: colleagues from more than fifteen countries, English as the working language and a strong open-source culture, with part of the work public on GitHub. The level is high, with many engineers from the TU Delft among others, so you learn from strong colleagues every day. As a scale-up of around thirty people, not everything is set in stone yet, so you take plenty of ownership and have direct influence. And because the organisation is part of a larger, stable software group, you build with the calm and security that a startup often lacks.

Your role: Java Backend Engineer Delft

As a Java Backend Engineer you build the core of the platform, with Java 21 and Spring Boot as the foundation and Rust where performance and safety call for it. You design and develop APIs, integrations and platform components, and you make the architecture decisions that determine whether the platform can scale reliably.

The real challenge is reliability and security at scale. How do you connect disparate systems without losing the meaning of the data? How do you guarantee authorisation and privacy on every exchange? How do you keep everything correct and available as the number of connected parties grows? These are exactly the questions you solve here.

You are more than a builder. You help set the technical direction, establish standards, share knowledge and raise the engineering level. You have plenty of freedom to decide how things get built.

What are we looking for?

  • At least 3 years of experience as a Backend Engineer
  • Strong in Java and Spring Boot
  • Experience with or an interest in Rust, Go or other low-level language is a plus
  • A bachelor’s or master’s in computer science is important
  • Experience with containers such as Docker or Kubernetes is important
  • Good command of English (the working language is English)

What’s on offer?

  • Salary up to €65.000
  • Plus bonus, bringing your total up to €70.000
  • Travel allowance
  • Choice of 40, 36 or 32 hours per week
  • Pension scheme
  • 25 holidays
  • One month a year working fully remote from abroad
  • Plenty of knowledge sharing and training opportunities
  • Working on your own products with real societal impact
  • An international team at a high level and a strong open-source culture
  • The stability of a larger software group behind you
